It's amazing how much of the price of gasoline is tax. Here in Canada I pay about $0.50 US for a liter of gasoline - that works out to be about $2 US for a gallon. I've seen a break-down of the price - and about 55% of the total cost is tax.

If there were no tax on gasoline I'd only be paying about $1 a gallon. I wouldn't mind so much if those taxes were ear-marked to go for paying for new roads, bicycle lanes, mass-transit, etc, but it actually goes into general revenue, and I'm pretty certain that not all of the money collected gets dedicated to transportation.
